However, I got exactly what I was thinking. My mind was expanded on the true hard work in the industry of agriculture and environmental sustainability. I left Costa Rica with ample gratitude for services and workers in that industry both at home and abroad. As for studying Spanish, that’s where the dream for studying abroad came into play for me. Throughout my early childhood years, I wa always proficient in my Spanish courses. My long time Spanish teacher, Senora Aubain, introduced me to the possibility of studying abroad in middle school and it has been a dream since. Senora Aubain, mentioned in a previous Flier Story, is a Panamanian woman from St. Thomas who exposed me to the beauties of Latin American culture and mentorship. So here I am, a young Black American woman from Atlanta, a black city in the south, who attends an HBCU studying in Costa Rica. To know the statistics of my demographics, it’s understated to say I was living a dream. This dream required HARD WORK and DETERMINATION during the entire stay. The demand of the program was tougher than anything I had done for such a long time. On weekends, my lunch was made by my Host mom. During the weekdays, I was a regular at “Aroma y Sabor”, a restaurant that offered everything from sandwiches, pasta, coffee, desserts, pizzas, and more. It was not a time that I went there and left unsatisfied with my meal. I often got the “Wrap de pollo sin tocineta”, which is the chicken wrap, no bacon. I had the guilty pleasure of a tres leches cake more times than I’d like to admit. I always followed up with water, coffee, or “jugo naturales de pina” (pineapple juice/smoothie). Dinner was always various. I enjoyed the fish and rice dinners the most, and I actually got to overcome the fear of eating from a fish with the head still intact. I must say, it was delightful. I honestly don’t recall my host mom frying any food either. I make it my business to regularly express my love for my community. It really is solidified in my principles that you attract what you project. So when choosing a host family, I had faith that I would be placed with a family so open, loving, and supportive. Even with the highest faith, I was still so unknowing of just how gracious God was when he paired me with my host family. They provided a safe space for me, even when people and forces outside of their homes were not so open and nice. I can always say I have a Tica family as long as my host mom, sisters, and grandma exist. I can’t thank them enough, but just acknowledging how great they were at hosting me is a start. Remember when I said I shared tears of joy and sadness? It was with these 2 beautiful women that we all shared both. Natalie, half-Turkish and half-American, taught me so much about the world. I will even go as far as to say that she has helped me stay consistent in reading whether she knows or not. Quiet and humble, but don’t get it confused with weak, as she is one of the wisest people I now know. Daysi, a 1st generation American of El Salvadoran descent, she embodies what an “ally” looks like. Her bubbly spirit and “San Fran” vibes lit up my trip from the moment we met. She is a force to be reckoned with, as when she wants something, she knows how to work for it. These brief summaries do no justice to the magnitude of my gratitude for these ladies in my life. Her journey of working with cannabis began with just extracts while helping a best friend with their complications of Breast Cancer. This is the 1st time I’m truly processing this. I must first say, there are no words to explain how I feel about pursuing such a big, bold dream… ON SCHOLARSHIPS! I’m beyond grateful. I know that the journey I am embarking on is the reflection of faith & work. The fact that I come from where I come from & the “standards” expected of me makes me know that this journey is so much bigger than me. I remember that young Re, who envisioned becoming bilingual, studying in a Latin country. While my eyes were closed, Ashanti's song “Mother” came on and tears surfaced. It made me think of my Mom, who helped me along every step of my journey. It made me think of that younger me. It made me think of a young self who did not yet know my destiny, let alone that it was more to life. That younger me was so filled with anger, often misunderstood, and even attempted to give up on life. Wow… look at me now. As tears dropped during that song, it was tears of a revelation. I am living the testimony. I am on the journey to move the many I represent. I’m a young African American woman, navigating a world set to a standard of deception about my worth. Knowing how and where I grew up, the enemy wants me to believe that I don’t belong or deserve. However, I walk with the almighty God and I am living my ancestors’ wildest dreams. I’m supported by an infinite community of God’s soldiers. I am the epitome of the creator because God walks through me. With this, I pray over this trip. I pray to fulfill the missions lined up, heal, expand my horizons, build my brand which is about to expand and REPRESENT. This journey is so much greater than me. It’s been a long time since I’ve been the only. I am the only black person on this trip. Through representation, hopefully, I can INSPIRE my communities at home to increase these numbers.
